After the screen adaptation of three of Chetan Bhagat’s
novels, here is the forth one in the form of 2 States. Directed by Abhishek
Verman, this film has Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles, and has hit
the screens today. Let’s see what this unusual love story has in store for us.
Story:
Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) is a Punjabi lad from Delhi,
while Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt), is a Tamilian from Chennai. The two
study together in IIM-Ahmedabad and soon get romantically involved with each
other. But the real problem starts after they settle in their respective jobs,
and come close to the time of getting married. The two decide to approach each
other’s family and convince them.
How will the two culturally different families get along with
each other? Will Ananya and Krish manage to convince each other’s parents? That
forms the rest of the story.
Positive Points:
Even though love stories are extremely common in bollywood,
what happens after the ‘happily ever after’ is what 2 States explains. It is
nothing like the other bollywood love stories, but is a rather mature one which
will probably teach the couples of this generation to love and respect each
other’s traditions and cultures.
Alia and Arjun are said to be the alleged couple in
real-life, and their wild chemistry is clearly seen in the movie. They look
extremely cute and fresh together.
Arjun surprises in a big way. The actor has been playing some
aggressive roles earlier, but this one is surely a feather on his hat. The
actor is calm, composed and patient in his mature act in the flick.
Alia, on the other hand, is brilliant. She carries the role
of a simple yet outspoken South Indian girl with ease and its her expressions
that speak more than her words.
The rest of the supporting cast including Amrita Singh is
brilliant as a chirpy mother. Ronit Roy is in his usual best as a controlling
father. Shiv Kumar Subramaniam and Revathy bring out an outstanding
father-mother performance.
Negative Points:
2 States is neither a Ram-Leela nor a Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam,
which are high on creativity. 2 States does not focus on the creative factor at
all. It is a story that has been earlier covered in movies like Ek Duje Ke Liye
and so has nothing much new to offer.
Also the story is so simple that not even a single scene
stays with you after the film. Neither an emotional scene is not so emotional
that it can make you cry, nor a comedy scene is so funny that it makes you
laugh your lungs out.
Technical Aspects:
The movie is Chetan
Bhagat’s book ’2 States’ adaptation and director Abhishek Varman has
efficiently portrayed the thinking, the mind set and the cultural differences
between two geographical different families in a perfect way.
Right from the cliched
college romance and the love songs to the traditional dance and family
functions, Abhishek has shown everything in the most apt way possible.
The movie is the
prefect example of a very common problem that emerges between families of different
cultures and backgrounds when their children decide to get married.
The slapstick humour
in the movie is quite entertaining. While the first half of the movie is filled
with it, the second half gets a little tedious with the same old family drama.
The songs of the film
are amazing and are placed well in the plot. Especially Locha-e-ulfat and Uffo
stay with you even after the film gets over.
Verdict:
On a whole, 2 States
is one of the most sensible films of recent time. Stunning performances by Alia
and Arjun and edgy narration make this film more than a one time watch indeed.
